A seminar open to the public will be held at Raffles Junior College as a conclusion to SSPC 07, where four seminar speakers will share their insights. The speakers are each established photographers in their respective photographic area of expertise:

§ Ms Dorothy Ho, Editor of The Photo Essay, specialising in social action photography
§ Mr Bryan Van der Beek, photographer, specialising in photojournalism
§ Ms Pearl Chan, fashion photographer
§ Mr Francis Ng, art photographer and mixed-media installation artist

The speakers will each be speaking for half an hour, after which there will be a short Q&A. Refreshments will be provided during the break.

Participants of the seminar may also take the chance to view the SSPC winning entries in the exhibition held near the seminar venue.

SEMINAR SPEAKERS

Bryan Van der Beek
Bryan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from the Indiana University. He has a wealth of experience working with many established magazines both locally and in the United States, including Newsweek, Time Asia and Business Week among many others. He has also worked with the Singapore History Museum on a project titled “>38°C Remembering SARS” and produced a book with the Singapore Disability Sports Council entitled “The Sporting Life”. Bryan won an award at the Hearst Photojournalism Competition 2001 for his work on the demonstrations in Indonesia. He is currently working as a photojournalist for The Straits Times. Dorothy Ho
Dorothy is the editor of The Photo Essay – a website dedicated to promote issue-driven photography to affect social change. The Photo Essay has launched several projects, including InsideOut and DayOff which focus on migrant workers in Singapore. The projects can be viewed at thephotoessay.com.

Francis Ng
Francis is a photographer and a mixed-media installation artist. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Fine Art degree from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (RMIT) Australia. Francis became the first Singaporean photographer to win the top prize at the Philip Morris Group of Companies Asean Art Awards in 2002. He has also won the 2002/2003 Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Singapore (JCCI) Arts Award and the 2003 President’s Young Talent Award, the UOB Painting of the Year Competition 2004 for photography and the 2004/2005 IDC-Design Excellence (Service Industry) Distinction Award. Francis was selected to represent Singapore a the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003, and at the 5th Gwangju Biennale (South Korea) in 2004.

Pearl Chan
Pearl graduated with a “Highly Commended” standing from the Australia Center for Photography in Sydney for Digital Media, Photojournalism and Fashion. Her photograph “Sun Burns?” was one of the few chosen for the Australian Absolut Cut campaign held by Absolut Vodka. She has exhibited her personal works in Fine Art Photography at the Epsite Gallery in Singapore. Pearl is currently a full-time fashion and advertorial photographer.
