Raffles on the move: From Mt Sinai to Bishan
On Wednesday, 29 Dec 2004, Raffles Junior College (RJC) marked its move from its erstwhile campus at Mount Sinai to its new campus at Bishan Street 21 in a logistically challenging way. Informally referred to as the Mass Rafflesian Transit (MRT) by RJC students, the move involved transporting about 850 RJC students and staff from Buona Vista to Bishan in a direct MRT service chartered specially for RJC’s use by SMRT.
The ceremonial move symbolically brought to a close a colourful phase in RJC’s history, which saw the college grow from strength to strength over the past 21 years at Mt Sinai, and heralded a new and exciting chapter to be unfolded at Bishan. This new chapter would focus on RJC as an independent college in a 8.65 hectare campus, equipped with up-to-date facilities that would adequately enhance the programmes designed to develop its students holistically.
Said Chairman of the RJC Board of Governors Professor Cham Tao Soon , “Raffles Junior College has an excellent reputation both at home and worldwide. Many of its graduates have done well in their lives. Moving to the new campus with its excellent facilities will add value to its already first-class education. The independent status acquired will give the College the flexibility to do greater things.”
RJC’s move next to its affiliated school, Raffles Institution, would also offer more opportunities for both schools to collaborate and share facilities, e.g. performance and practice rooms, courts, swimming pool, track and field. At the same time, RJC would continue the good practice of sharing resources and facilities with its other affiliated school, Raffles Girls’ School (Secondary). Thus, cohort bonding among the three schools in the Raffles family would be enhanced.
This was the second time RJC moved since it began as a junior college in Patterson Road in 1982. The first move was in 1983 when the college relocated to Mount Sinai which provided better facilities and a larger site to cater to junior college education.
