A knowledge and understanding of a culture is vital to the successful study of its language. The awareness of culture is the distinctive element in the study of languages at Raffles. Recent initiatives to expose students to the languages as they are used in broader society – including the use of media and Internet resources in teaching – contribute to the vitality of language learning at Raffles.
Catering to Diverse
Needs – Study of the mother tongues, Chinese, Malay,
and Tamil languages, is offered to everyone at two levels –
A and AO Levels. Tutors are careful to take into account varying
language abilities in their teaching, ensuring that everyone benefits
from the course.
Opportunities for Expression – Creative Writing Competitions and Oratorical Competitions are annual events for all mother tongue languages, enabling students to stretch their expressive abilities to the fullest. Rafflesians are also highly active in competitions and cultural events outside college.
