English

English at Raffles is a stimulating, challenging, enjoyable and rewarding programme. Students will find that they need a healthy enthusiasm for the study of literature, as they will be encouraged to become personally involved in the texts they study.

Personal Response - Individual students are given the opportunity to share their ideas in a friendly and informal atmosphere. Students are led to develop informed personal responses to the texts they study.

Skills and Sensitivities are developed in the ‘Comment and Appreciation’ paper offered at Raffles. Through a structured course, students learn to make a successful analysis of any extract of prose, poetry or drama which they may encounter – an invaluable skill in any arena.

Enrichment and Expression – Students enhance their appreciation of texts through performances, readings, multimedia material and a wealth of co-curricular activities within and outside the classroom. Numerous related CCAs in the college such as the Creative Writing Club and Raffles Players attest to the dynamism and creative energies of our students.

General Paper

In the General Paper at Raffles, students are helped to acquire the language skills which will empower them not only for the AO-Level examination, but for their personal and working life. The course is topic-based so that language is acquired at the same time as knowledge and opinions about subjects like science and human values, law and society, philosophy and religion.

Creative and Critical Thinking are staples of the General Paper programme at Raffles, which equips students to form their own opinions on matters of individual, national and international importance. Project work, structured debates and conferences feature regularly in the course.

Effective Communication – Students learn to communicate effectively – both orally and through writing – in order to present a persuasive and reasoned opinion in a variety of situations. In the classroom, lessons are often informal and students are given ample opportunities to express their views.

A Varied Programme – The General Paper at Raffles features an exciting range of teaching methods and activities, including discussion groups, research work, learning journeys and visits, surveys, media analysis and debates.

A Wealth of Information – Apart from a GP resource website, the unit publishes a termly GP Bulletin which features the best of students’ work and articles on writing skills and general knowledge.
