RI at Bras Basah

 
1823

Raffles Institution (RI) was founded on 5 June 1823 at the junction of Bras Basah and Beach Roads, where it would remain for the next 149 years. The vision of founder Sir Stamford Raffles was for the school to be a premier educational institution which would serve the country well.
1886

The first Pre-University centre with its Queen’s Scholarship classes was started at RI. In the years that ensued, RI came to be well known for producing many Queen’s Scholars in the Straits Settlements .

1923

The Old Rafflesians' Association was formed on 28 April, 1923 , with an aim of encouraging lively interaction among Rafflesians who had passed out of the school, as well as to promote continued interest among Rafflesians of the school’s progress.

1972 RI moved to new premises in Grange road which was equipped with enhanced facilities such as squash courts, tennis courts, lecture rooms, a sports complex and a swimming pool.
 
RJC at Patterson Road
 
1982

RI’s pre-university section was transferred to the temporary campus at Patterson Road.

RI’s pre-university section was transferred to Patterson Road campus and Raffles Junior College was established to offer the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate in Education 'Advanced' Level (GCE A-Level) curriculum.

With the formation of RJC, pre-university education in RI was discontinued. However, RJC continued RI’s excellent tradition of producing good results and top students at pre-university level.

1984

RJC moved to Mt Sinai which provided better facilities and a larger site to cater to junior college education. It was to be its home for the next 21 years.
2002 RJC became the first Junior College to be awarded the Singapore Quality Class (SQC), a scheme to commend organisations that have attained a good level of performance in their journey to excellence. This was an ultimate accolade which recognised RJC’s significant achievements in various fields besides the academic field.

In the same year, RJC was also awarded the Best Practice Award for Teaching and Learning by the Ministry of Education. This was on top of the Sustained Achievement Award RJC received continuously from MOE for its outstanding achievements in Sports, Physical Fitness and the Arts.
2003

RJC applied to the Ministry of Education (MOE) for independent status and was granted approval to be an independent Junior College with effect from 1 January 2005.

2004

On 29 Dec 2004, RJC moved to its new campus at Bishan St 21, next to the RI campus. The new campus, with its improved facilities will adequately support the new programmes that the independent RJC will offer to its students.

2005 RJC became an independent junior college on 1 Jan 2005 and started functioning from its new campus.

In the same year, RJC also became the first junior college in Singapore to be awarded the School Excellence Award (SEA) - the pinnacle award for educational excellence in the Ministry of Educationīs Masterplan of Awards.  Other awards the College received were the Best Practice Award for Student All-round Development, the Best Practice Award for Staff Well-being, the Sustained Achievement Award for Sports & Games and the Sustained Achievement Award for Physical Fitness.
