157 stops at Braddell Road (by RJC’s side gate)

By MRT:
Bishan MRT, followed by a 10 min walk or Bishan MRT, then take bus 410

4. Why was there the need to relocate to a new campus?

The new campus would be able to accommodate a projected increase in our student population, from the current 1,700 to 2,300 in 2006, when we receive our first cohort of Raffles Programme (RP) students from Raffles Institution (RI) and Raffles Girls’ Secondary.

Equipped with up-to-date facilities, the new campus would adequately support the programmes designed to provide our students with a sound holistic Rafflesian education experience.

The relocation of RJC next to RI would also allow for more opportunities to collaborate and share facilities and resources between and RJC and RI. This collaboration wouldl benefit the Raffles family of schools, offering students enhanced learning opportunities and experiences, e.g. the use of the research laboratories, performance and practice rooms, courts, swimming pool, track and field.

Facilities at the new campus

5. How big is the new campus? What special facilities are there at the new campus?

The new campus is 8.65 hectares. It will allow us to accommodate the projected increase in student capacity from the current 1,700 to 2,300 in 2006, when we receive our first cohort of Raffles Programme (RP) students from RGS and RI, and begin implementing the RP at RJC.

The special facilities in the new campus which directly aid learning and support the programmes we have planned for our students include, but are not limited to:

  • The Performing Arts Centre which will provide groups from the Raffles schools as well as the community greater performance opportunities and enhance the vibrant arts culture at RJC.
  • The Music Studio which is a conducive suite of practice rooms will allow our students in the Music Elective Programme to develop their musical talents.
  • Six Research Labs for the Research@Raffles Programme which will allow for mentorship programmes to take place on our campus, and so encourage a keen interest in science research.
  • Indoor Sports Hall where programmes such as physical education lessons, sports and games training, arts-cultural development, community service projects and leadership development programmes will be conducted.
  • The one-stop Student Services Centre which will provide our students with comprehensive support in skills enhancement, psychological counselling, financial assistance, university admission and career guidance

6. Will RJC be sharing facilities with the other two Raffles schools?

Currently, there exists a culture of sharing facilities among the Raffles family of schools, namely, RGS , RI and RJC. The relocation of RJC next to RI will further enhance this culture as RI and RJC will have more opportunities to collaborate and share facilities, e.g. performance and practice rooms, courts, swimming pool, track and field. This is especially important for the development of niche sports at both schools. The synergy will enhance cohort bonding between the two schools.

7. Will RJC be sharing its facilities with the community at Bishan? What are some of these facilities open to the community?

RJC will continue our good practice of making available college resources to community agencies at our new campus.

Our Indoor Sports Hall will provide the community with an added facility to host sports activities and various small scale mass events. We believe that an openness to share facilities with the community will enable our college to forge mutually beneficial partnerships with the community.

Independent RJC

8. Why was there a need for RJC to become an independent college? What are some benefits of attaining independent status?

RJC recognised that in order to maintain its status as a leading, effective and innovative educational centre, it had to be nimble, responsive and pioneering in this evolving economic, social and educational landscape. This could only be achieved with the greater autonomy and flexibility, inherent in independent schools, in the management of personnel, resources and curricular offerings.

As an independent college, RJC has the scope and flexibility of providing a forward-looking curriculum that is differentiated and learner-centred, best suited to developing bright and talented students. This is in line with the changing education landscape, which is rapidly moving from a one-size fits all curriculum to one that is more customised to suit the learning needs of students.

Special Programmes offered at RJC

9. What are some special programmes that are offered at RJC?

Our special programmes are wide in scope and touch on the sciences, biculturalism, humanities, performing arts and community service. They are specially designed to harness the talents and interests of our students, to motivate them to learn and grow.

These programmes include but are not limited to:

  • Research@Raffles which is a research mentoring programme, carried out in partnership with institutions such as Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA) and Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR).
  • Raffles Bicultural Programme ( China ) which aims to enhance the Chinese language ability of our students as well as raise their understanding of the Chinese culture and the development of modern China in the recent century.
  • Raffles Asia Programme which will help students acquire a good knowledge of the geopolitics, history and culture of Asia (chiefly, China, India and South-East Asia ).

10. What is the Raffles Programme (RP) about?

The Raffles Programme (RP), designed collaboratively by RI, RGS and RJC, is an integrated, differentiated and seamless curriculum for gifted and talented students spanning 6 years from Secondary 1 to JC 2, with the GCE A Levels as the graduating national examination.

Please visit the Raffles Programme website for more information.

Personnel

11. What are the staff at RJC like?

The educators and administrative staff at RJC are of exceptional calibre and we work together to uphold RJC’s excellent tradition of nurturing bright and talented young people.

Our teachers are confident, self-motivated, innovative and passionate about educating students. They are dedicated to the students’ best interest and well-being, and contribute towards creating a learning environment that challenges students to be curious about learning, excited about exploring and creating new knowledge, and passionate about leading.

RJC and the Community

12. How are RJC students involved in community programmes?

At RJC, community service is a cornerstone programme. Our students are empowered to initiate community projects by identifying the needs of the community and addressing these needs on a project basis. We believe that this helps to develop a student’s character and bonds him or her more strongly with the community. It is our conviction that this approach leads to a more long term commitment to the community.

In 2004, Rafflesians initiated about 120 community service learning projects. Numerous camps and day programmes were organized for homes, welfare services and organizations. With our move to our new campus, we hope to expand our reach as we lead in serving the Bishan/Toa Payoh community and beyond.

The monthly fee for foreign students who join RJC in 2007 is $1,200 per month (excluding monthly miscellaneous fee).

15. Will there be a fee increase after 2007?

Refer to Qn 13. The school fee rates for the Raffles family of schools will be aligned for students in the three schools in 2008.

16. Are there financial aid programmes available to students who cannot afford the fees at RJC?

Admission into RJC is by merit. No deserving local student who qualifies for a place in RJC will be denied a RJC education because of financial constraints. RJC has in place financial assistance schemes to help our needy and deserving students.

17. Why is there the need to revise the school fees?

RJC is committed to providing the best education for bright and talented students to nurture them to become thinkers, leaders and pioneers who will serve the greater good of society and nation. Through the Raffles Programme, the College will have the flexibility of offering enriched and enhanced programmes to better meet the special needs of our students. As these specialised programmes require more resources, the College has had to review the current school fees.

RJC has carefully considered the fee revision and has obtained the approval from the Ministry of Education to have a joint fee structure with the Raffles family of schools to align the school fee rates for students in RI, RGS and RJC by 2008.

Student Services

18. What are some student services available to assist students?

The Student Services Centre will provide comprehensive support in skills enhancement, psychological counselling, financial assistance, university admission and career guidance. The Student Services Centre will be able to customise these services for each student.

A typical college day begins with assembly at 7:40 am and continues into mid-afternoon, with breaks in between, and usually ends before 4:00 pm . On Wednesdays, the college day ends at 12:00 noon to allow time for CCA activities. The academic curriculum time is approximately 28 hours a week.

Admission criteria

23. What are the admission criteria for RJC?

Under the Joint Admissions Exercise, students are posted to RJC by MOE based on their merit (L1R5) first, then choice.

In the case of students seeking direct admission into RJC, we will consider their academic achievements, sports and/or aesthetic talents, and their ability to benefit from the diverse range of learning opportunities at RJC.

24. What is the cut-off point for students applying for admission to RJC?

Based on the 2008 JC1 intake, the cut-off points after bonus points have been considered are as follows:

Provisional Admission Exercise

Joint Admission Exercise

Science

4

3

Arts

4

25. Do students from non-Rafflesian secondary schools fit in at RJC?

RJC welcomes bright and talented students from not only the Raffles schools, but also from other schools in Singapore and the region. Students, with their different experiences and backgrounds, will add diversity and sparkle to RJC.

We feel honoured and privileged that students have chosen RJC as their college and we serve and support each student to our best ability. Students from non-Raffles family of schools generally find Rafflesians at the college friendly, approachable and eager to welcome them into the Rafflesian community.

26. What are RJC's criteria for admitting students for discretionary places?

RJC seeks to admit students who have special talents and strong abilities in various domains including sports, aesthetics, academic studies, leadership and service. Our unique education, and the special programmes we offer, will nurture and develop these high achievers' potential. These students, with their diverse backgrounds and talents, will add sparkle and diversity to RJC.

Students seeking admission for discretionary places must meet the following criteria:
  • They must meet the minimum criteria for admission into a JC; and
  • They must demonstrate a high level of competence and achievements in various domains including sports, aesthetics, academic studies, leadership and service.
Miscellaneous

27. Do I stand a chance if I do not meet the cut-off points?

No one can tell what the cut-off for the 2007 Joint Admission Exercise will be at this point. The cut-off is not pre-determined by the college; it depends on "demand and supply". It will only be known after the posting results are out, so you will have to gauge your chances based on last year's cut-off.

28. I cannot make it to Science, so can I apply to Arts and then later appeal to Science?

The appeal is based on the number of vacant positions, and is therefore limited. If your appeal is unsuccessful, you will have to stay on in the Arts stream.

29. Can I do an Arts course in the first three months and switch to Science after the release of the GCE O-Level results?

Yes, you can but it is very difficult to catch up after the first three months. You should consider doing a Science course in another JC unless you have interest in the Arts.

30. How do I compute my bonus points?

There are 3 categories of bonus points:
* Obtaining at least a C6 in Higher Mother Tongue - 2 points
* Students from affiliated schools, i.e., RI and RGS or student provisionally admitted to RJC- 2 points if
they choose course(s) from RJC as their 1st choice or 1st and 2nd choices
* Obtaining A1 or A2 in CCA - 2 points
* Obtaining B3 to C6 in CCA - 1 point
Students can accumulate a maximum of 4 bonus points.

31. What are the co-curricular activity groups available at RJC?

You can find information about the various CCAs at our CCA page.

32. What is the main emphasis at RJC ? Is it academic achievement?

The emphasis at RJC is the all-round development of our students. Academic achievement is certainly important, but it goes hand in hand with the nurturing of other strengths, talents, instincts and life-skills, such as leadership, integrity, creativity, cultural awareness and social responsibility, which are equally important qualities of a fully educated individual.

33. Isn't RJC too stressful and competitive a college to be in?

Rafflesians work hard to maintain high standards for themselves, but they also play hard as well. What's important is striking the right balance and managing your time well in order to make the best of your college life.

34. I'm afraid of not being able to cope.

Teachers are always on hand to help or offer advice. They will not place undue pressure on students, but will look at each case individually to work out what's best for you.
